Gravity Fed Hot Water Units

If you have low hot water pressure and find it hard to control the temperature in your shower you probably have an old gravity hot water unit in your roof.  These units are old outdated electric water heaters that only use the gravity pressure to feed your fixtures.  There is also the risk with these unit of them bursting and causing major damage to your house.  At 2 Brothers Plumbing we have changed many of these out for new mains pressure water heaters.  We cut off and drain the water out of the tank in the roof then install a new mains pressure hot water unit wherever suits around your house. See our choosing a hot water unit section for information on which unit would suit you best.

Solar Hot Water

Want to reduce your gas or electricity bill? Looking for a green option?  Then solar hot water might be the answer.  Solar hot water harnesses the power of the sun to heat the water naturally and only uses power/gas to bring the water up to temperature if the water isn’t hot enough.  Some government rebates are available depending on your situation.

What Causes Hot Water Issues

2 Brothers Plumbing can effect quick and efficient hot water repairs. We can easily find the source of the problem and correct it, since most hot water problems are easy to figure out. It is important to call us right away when you have hot water problems, though, since you don’t want the problem to become worse.

Hot water systems can experience problems for a variety of reasons. We are going to look at some of the more common reasons why they may occur.

When sediment builds up in the water heating system it can stop water form coming out where it is supposed to. It can also damage the water heater’s various components. This happens often in rural areas where minerals can get into the heating system. In order to extend the life of the heater and get the hot water working properly, the sediment has to be removed. The plumber can flush out your system to get rid of it, and they will inspect the heater as well to see how much damage has been done.

Leaks can be another source of the problem. These use up your hot water and cost you money, depriving you of the hot water you should be getting.

The water heater may have broken down. If so it’s quite possible the hip tube is the culprit. This important component affects how much hot water your household receives.

The relief mains for the hot water system can also break down. The main can release whenever there is a lot of pressure on the heating system, and that can force hot water out of your taps and shower head. You have to get this fixed right away, since it can be potentially dangerous. Besides just causing burns, it can also damage your heating system and create mould growth.

Signs That You Need Hot Water Repair

Every home in Australia needs hot water. You probably feel like you cannot live without it. It’s useful for washing clothes, taking a comfortable shower when the weather is cool, keeping the house clean and washing dishes. Hot water makes these tasks either easier to do or more enjoyable for you.

Your hot water system, like any system in your home, can break down over time. It probably won’t be expected, and you need to know what you can do to fix the problem so that you can get back to your normal routine. A hot water heater that isn’t working correctly can cause quite a disruption. You can avoid a serious breakdown by paying attention to the warning signs and letting your local plumber know when there is a problem. We want to help you notice these clues when they occur so that you can do something about them. Here is our list of things to watch for in a hot water heating system:

Water no longer comes out of the tap- This may just be a problem with a single tap or it could be system-wide. You should check the other taps in the house before you make any rushed decisions. Check for cold water as well as hot. If no water is coming out, then your main line may be shut off. If it isn’t, then call your plumber to sort out the issue. Water comes out, but is not hot- The lack of heated water could be due to a gas supply that’s running on empty. It could also be that the pilot light for the water heating system is off. Another possibility could be a tripped circuit breaker.

Odd noises are emanating from the water tank- This is likely due to sediment build-up. If you flush the tank, that could fix the problem, but if the noise persists, then call your plumber for advice. Water is leaking from the hot water tank- This is something that only a professional plumber should be trying to fix. You can turn off the gas if you are using a gas system, while you are waiting for the plumber to arrive. If you are using an electrical system, then turning off the switchboard can be helpful.  Afterwards, see if you can figure out where the water is leaking from.

Water is leaking from the outlet valve- When you see water coming from the T&P valve, then you shouldn’t be too alarmed. However, if it is more than what normally comes out of there, you need to contact your plumber. The sooner you call the plumber, the faster the issue can be corrected and hot water can be restored.
