How to Prevent a Blocked Drain

You may not be able to see your plumbing, but you definitely rely on it every day, and you don’t want to forget to keep it maintained to ensure it is operating like it should all the time. You can go from one minute where you are enjoying your day to the next where you are desperately trying to fix your toilet or drains, all because of a plumbing problem.

What Goes Down

One of the biggest plumbing problems that people in Australia encounter is a blocked drain. Plumbing experts always advise people to practice good daily habits with their plumbing to ensure that your drain doesn’t become blocked.

People can forget sometimes, though, and they may do whatever is most convenient for them at the moment and not think about the consequences. They may, through a small oversight, cause a serious problem that will become worse and worse in time, perhaps waking up to a blocked drain one day.

What steps can you take to ensure that your drains don’t become blocked? Here are some of our best tips:

Don’t pour oil down the drain.

Since oil is liquid, many people feel that it is fine to pour it down their drain. But oil can have lard and fat in it that sticks to the drain and clogs it up. These solids can become thicker over time and block up pipes. Oil should be placed into a container instead of poured down the drain. That container can then be thrown away. If you have an empty tin can, that works great for getting rid of oil in the trashcan.

Be careful about the size of food you put down the drain.

Many people throw their food scraps down the drain without even thinking about the impact it can have on their pipes. Many drains have garbage shredders in them, but not all. Even so, you still need to be careful about what you throw into the garbage disposal.

This device is meant to tear apart objects that are soft and small. If you are putting fruit pits, bones or very hard vegetables down the chute, then they may not be chopped up. They can even damage the chute and its blades. Eventually, they will become stuck and block your drain.

Watch your children in the bathroom.

Children won’t be as careful in the bathroom as adults will, nor will they know as well what items can go into the toilet or drain. If you aren’t watching the kids, then they may put something in the drain that should not be there. Be sure to keep an eye on the kids and any toys they take into the bathroom as well. If they put the wrong thing into the toilet, it can overflow and cause serious problems.

You can prevent a blocked drain if you are mindful of these guidelines and just be careful about what goes into your drains. Many blockage problems can be avoided, but if you do have a blockage, you should call the plumbing professionals right away.
